          * Surnames in Bosham Parish Registers (PR) could be interpreted as ending in R or LL
KARVER in 1724 in PR is transcribed as KEARVELL in Bishops Transcripts
A snapshot of our surname as recorded in Parish Records at Bosham and other parishes.
Many of the variations appear fleetingly and serve to emphasise that the spelling was usually an interpretation by the parish priest or his parish clerk  from a spoken word. An interpretation that could even be different for siblings. Before National Schooling began in late 19th century most people could not read or write their name nor did they attend any form of regular schooling other than, perhaps, Sunday School. If we included marriage/burials records as well we would have a few further variations. The spelling KEARVELL endured - more by luck than judgement?
